Christmas time in Madrid

Its not quite as elegant as New York and something just doesn't feel Christmassy. But only two days left then off to Vienna and Paris!

Lectures in Rome

Alex lecturing in front of Augustus’s Altar of Peace. He had this tiny backpack but he kept pulling out maps and handouts and recreations every time he stopped.

Oops! Rome came in between parents and London girls.

More manatees

Manatees!

We really went because it was the opening weekend of the new manatee exhibit. Unfortunately, the exhibit wasn't complete and there was no information available about the manatees. All we found out is that they're from South America. I think they might be a different species or subspecies because they look thinner and longer than the manatees in Florida.

Faunia

Friday, Nora and I went to a wildlife amusement park in the suburbs of Madrid. They had a few incredible exhibits including a nocturnal exhibit that was dangerously dark (we kept running into each other) and this tropical rain forest that storms for 5 minutes every hour.

This is in Archbishop Ryan Park in Merrion Square.

We had a lovely breakfast of different flavored porridge and it was so beautiful inside.

The Irish Music Pub Crawl

These were our fabulous guides and we had a blast.

The New Yorkers already knew this…

Tasting the new North Star brew

Inside the courtyard of Dublin Castle

Dublin Castle

The Queen of Tarts

Rachel and I found an Alice’s-like tea house across from Dublin Castle that’s famous for their apple scones.

Trinity College

The Garden of Remembrance

A memorial in Parnell Square to all the Irish who died in the revolution.

The Old Customs House

St. Patrick’s Cathedral

The inside of the cathedral was more of a museum than a church but the stain glass was beautiful and much more intricate than in the churches in Spain.

Fish n Chips

We had lunch at a famous hole-in-the-wall fish and chips place called Leo Burdocks but didn’t realize that’s its an entire fish. Nora and I took our fried bundles down to the park around St. Patrick’s Cathedral and had a lovely lunch.

Hard Rain

Sunday was beautiful day and I walked down to the botanical gardens to see the Bob Dylan photography exhibit “Hard Rain”. I saw it during La Noche en Blanco but it was nighttime and raining so I wanted to see it during the day. It was still beautiful and moving but I think seeing it on a rainy night made it a little eerie in a very fitting way. Anyways, this is the olive grove where you tie your ribbon saying how you’re going to save the world.

Instituto Internacional

This is my school in Madrid! It’s a beautiful old building that was an elite high school until the ‘70s for children of ambassadors in Madrid.

Museo Arqueologico Nacional

I wanted to go here for the special exhibit on the Etruscos, a civilization in Italy that Rome conquered, but the rest of the museum seemed to be under construction and didn’t have much to offer.

Parque del Capricho

We spent at least an hour getting to and trying to find this beautiful park in the suburbs of Madrid but it was worth it.

Parade Party Buses

This is such a great idea for a parade. There were rolling concerts for each country in the parade and they had masses of dancers following them.

The Fun Parade

So the scary military parade was in the morning but at night the real parade happened. The South American communities in Madrid threw their own parade to celebrate whatever strange unity was being celebrated. In this parade, Spain was never mentioned. It was chaotic and fun and difficult to tell audience from parade. And everyone was waving the flag of their country. This is an awful picture but it gives you a good idea of the atmosphere (and all this is taking place directly outside the Prado).
