Manatees!

We really went because it was the opening weekend of the new manatee exhibit. Unfortunately, the exhibit wasn't complete and there was no information available about the manatees. All we found out is that they're from South America. I think they might be a different species or subspecies because they look thinner and longer than the manatees in Florida.

Hard Rain

Sunday was beautiful day and I walked down to the botanical gardens to see the Bob Dylan photography exhibit “Hard Rain”. I saw it during La Noche en Blanco but it was nighttime and raining so I wanted to see it during the day. It was still beautiful and moving but I think seeing it on a rainy night made it a little eerie in a very fitting way. Anyways, this is the olive grove where you tie your ribbon saying how you’re going to save the world.

The Fun Parade
So the scary military parade was in the morning but at night the real parade happened. The South American communities in Madrid threw their own parade to celebrate whatever strange unity was being celebrated. In this parade, Spain was never mentioned. It was chaotic and fun and difficult to tell audience from parade. And everyone was waving the flag of their country. This is an awful picture but it gives you a good idea of the atmosphere (and all this is taking place directly outside the Prado).Día de Dos Desfiles

Friday was a national holiday in Spain celebrating the unity of the Spanish race. And by Spanish race they mean all the nations they colonized in the Americas. So to celebrate this, the government threw a massive military parade complete with tanks and jets flying low over the city. Both the king and president aired public service announcements all week telling Spaniards it was their duty to come to the parade to show support for their country. Nothing was ever mentioned about the Americas…
